Foodies To Become ‘Do-Goodies’ In Innovative Cookbook Contest For Charity

Snack producer seeks 50 original recipes using riceworks® crisps as an ingredient.

Could you invent a dish containing a triangular rice snack? You could be published in a unique cookbook called riceworks® Recipeworks, with all proceeds going to charity.

Popular snack producer, Shearer’s Foods, Inc. has issued a challenge. Use its famous riceworks® Gourmet Brown Rice Crisps in a new recipe that you post at www.riceworksrecipeworks.com for your chance to win, and be published with 49 other food aficionados in this one-of-a-kind cookbook.

How the contest works
Participants are invited to register and submit their recipe anytime before midnight on October 1, 2010. Next, an independent panel of judges will select what they deem the top 50. Then they’ll expedite production of riceworks® Recipeworks, an inspired cookbook featuring the winning recipes, in time for the holidays.

Recipes will be judged and scored for: taste, 30%; originality, 30%; difficulty, 20% and presentation, 20%. The judges are Tricia Ryan, Director of Marketing for riceworks®, John Frostad, Executive Vice-President of Shearer’s Foods, Inc., and Shelley Case, Registered Dietician and author of the popular book, “Gluten-Free Diet”.

It began with a challenge
“It’s the next step in an ongoing campaign which riceworks® started just before last year’s holidays,” reminisces Tricia Ryan. “That contest, ‘Show Us Your Goodness’, also raised funds for charity. But this year, we’re blending riceworks® Recipeworks with our outdoor summer promotion How riceworks® Better.”

Reaching out locally this summer, riceworks® is attending community events in parts of Canada and the United States. Brand ambassadors of riceworks® will challenge snack lovers with the declaration, “Your snack works – riceworks® better.” While giving away samples of riceworks® crisps, the riceworks® brand ambassadors will inform consumers about riceworksrecipeworks.com and their chance to be published in riceworks® Recipeworks.

Look for riceworks® teams at events as widespread as the Taste of the Danforth Festival in Toronto, Ontario, August 6 – 8, and the Fisherman’s Feast in Boston’s North End, August 12 – 15.

Why another cookbook in time for the holidays?
“One reason is people living with celiac disease. They often feel left out at the dinner table,” sympathizes Ms Ryan, also a dietician though not professionally practicing. “Their condition means they can’t enjoy foods with wheat, barley or rye which is an excruciatingly long list. But it doesn’t mean they can’t – you know – have their cake and eat it too!”

That’s where riceworks® Recipeworks cookbook comes in. However, it’s also bound to be claimed by those many diet-watchers who’ve cottoned onto the gluten-free trend in dieting, and people who just love good food.

Indeed, many recipes which riceworks® devotees have already shared are very creative. “Most of us are stumped beyond the idea of riceworks® crisps with dip or salsa,” says Ms Ryan. “But you’d be surprised at how innovative these recipes are! For instance, you can grind riceworks® crisps into dust, creating ‘flour’ and suddenly you can make a tasty cheesecake base.”

Making quotation fingers in the air, Ms Ryan sheepishly smiles and says, “The ideas ‘mushroom’ from there. Sure, that’s a terrible joke but it’s all for a good cause.”

Thrilling New Drink and Snack Pairing Helps Beat the Heat – In Style

Record-breaking temperatures do little to slow wine lovers and foodies. In the Niagara Region, N’Icewine Slushies are making a splash, while Salsa Fresca riceworks® is the perfect partner for food pairing.

Record-breaking temperatures do little to slow wine lovers and foodies, always searching for the next big taste pairing. In the Niagara Region, N’Icewine Slushies are making a splash, while Salsa Fresca riceworks®complete the thrill.

Invented at The Ice House Winery in Niagara on the Lake, N’Icewine Slushies are a mouthful to say and enjoy – but fortunately easy to create. Combine 250ml of ice in your blender with 375ml of a crisp, toasting-style ice wine, such as Northern Ice Vidal Icewine, and presto! You have N’Icewine Slushies.

Ice wine with more ice? Isn’t that, umm, redundant?

“Not at all. In fact, it’s enhanced,” says Karen King, an international sensory food and wine researcher for over 25 years. “Blending ice with this new toasting style of Icewine found in Northern Ice creates a complex flavour balance and a surprisingly refreshing finish is created.”

Want to impress friends and family this summer? Try Ms. King’s new pairing.

For a cascade of sensations throughout the mouth, Ms. King suggests serving N’Icewine Slushies to guests in martini or liquor glasses and pairing them with something spicy. Very picky, she’s even found the exact complement. It’s a specific flavor of a specific snack.

“We found a delicious and unexpected food pairing in Northern Ice Vidal Icewine and the Salsa Fresca flavor of riceworks® Gourmet Brown Rice Crisps.” This increasingly popular and healthy snack has found hundreds of interesting uses among its many devotees. However this combination may well become a favorite of theirs while converting many others.

“This is a uniquely complex, explosive, sweet and crisp ice wine. When you combine it with the multi-textural and spicy components of riceworks® Salsa Fresca, you get an extended taste experience that creates harmony in your mouth throughout the taste experience.” In short, it’s a pleasing mouthful.

Ms. King takes another sip then samples another riceworks® Salsa Fresca crisp. She closes her eyes, smiles and sighs. Clearly the surprising combination works. But why? “The slushy’s extra refreshing finish pairs well with spicy foods that have a lingering heat sensation.” Like riceworks® Salsa Fresca.

What is food pairing?

Food pairing involves personal preference and a matching of character notes to achieve the perfect balance and complexity. N’Icewine Slushies’ slow sensory delivery are a great vehicle for noticing the long lasting fine details in what Ms King calls a ‘dance of flavors’. In the 2010 summer heat wave, that dance is clearly a salsa.

You can sample this pairing yourself, free, when riceworks® brand ambassadors visit The Ice House Winery this summer on Wednesday, July 28, 2010. For more information, visit howriceworksbetter.com/schedule

Mind you, Ms Ryan is realistic. “Even though you don’t have to be on any special diet to enjoy these recipes, we don’t anticipate that we’ll see sales like Jamie OIiver’s latest book.” She smiles. “Though we’re just as keen to make a positive difference in the world!”

What will Canadians eat During Canada Day Celebrations?

June 30, 2010 — “Beavertails, beer and bacon work as a snack,” says Tricia Ryan, Director of Marketing for riceworks® Gourmet Brown Rice Crisps. “But riceworks® better!” Ms Ryan is issuing a challenge to Canadians this summer to see how her company’s snack works even better than their own.

News ImageIt starts on Canada Day. Brand ambassadors of riceworks® will be working the crowd in Confederation Park in Ottawa this July 1, 2010. Handing out free samples, the riceworks® team will challenge snack lovers with the declaration: “‘Your snack works – riceworks® better.”

“We’ve seen it work with Jamie Oliver’s new program. Going one-on-one locally lets you explain the benefits of healthier snacking without finger wagging,” Ms Ryan says. Owned by Shearer’s Foods Inc., riceworks® producers want Canadians to “think positively about snacking.” With no trans fats, no additives, no wheat or gluten and 33% less fat than most chips, the snack readily backs up its claim.

The free sampling in the nation’s capital on Canada Day is just the beginning. Brand ambassadors will also direct participants to demonstrate online “How riceworks® Better” for them.

Would you shoot a 1-minute video of yourself skydiving while snacking on riceworks® crisps? Or compose a limerick using riceworks® in a recipe? Either endeavor constitutes a viable entry for the How riceworks® Better contest. The grand prize? Enough riceworks® product to fulfill the winner’s suggestion, plus $4,000.

Contestants enter at www.howriceworksbetter.com anytime before midnight on September 30, 2010. They can type their entry there or add a link to a video or audio file. Entries can be up to 300 words or one minute long. Monthly over the summer, an independent panel of judges will select what they deem the best. Entries will be scored for: originality, 50% and creativity, 50%.

July 1 is also the launch of the riceworks® recipeworks cookbook contest

Do you ever cook with riceworks®? If “How riceworks® Better” for you is in a unique recipe, you may want to enter the popular snack’s other contest at www.riceworksrecipeworks.com . Running concurrently, “riceworks® recipeworks” will select 50 recipes containing riceworks® to appear in a cookbook coming out in time for the holidays. Proceeds will go to charity.

“It’s the next step in an ongoing campaign which riceworks® started just before last year’s holidays,” reminisces Ms Ryan. “That contest, ‘Show Us Your Goodness’, also raised funds for charity.”

This year, however, these snack marketers are combining efforts to maximize the noise. By blending ‘riceworks® recipeworks’ and ‘How riceworks® Better’ with outdoor summer promotions like the celebrations in Ottawa on Canada Day, Ms. Ryan and the riceworks® team hope to affect how Canadians eat.

“Not that there’s anything wrong with beer and bacon,” says Ms. Ryan. “It’s just that riceworks® better!”
